Local Inspectors In High Demand

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is in need of a few building inspector/bylaw enforcement officers immediately.

Paul Lacina, chief building official of building development services, stated in a media release that CK is looking to hire three people. He adds the urgent need to fill these positions stems from baby-boomers retiring, as well as stricter provincial regulations.

"In 2006 the province reformed the Ontario Building Code. The legislation increased the safety and quality of building construction in Ontario. One of the reforms was mandatory Building Code knowledge examinations for municipal building officials," he said in a statement. "Now with retirements, there is a real shortage of qualified building officials."

Eligible candidate should already be qualified through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, however, the municipality is willing to train those who are right for the position.

"Since there is such a demand for qualified inspectors, we’re open to hiring and training the right candidates," said Lacina. "Those with a background in construction or engineering may be suitable and preferred.”

A job fair for the positions will be held in council chambers at the Civic Centre on July 13, from 6pm-8pm.

The listed salary for a qualified inspectors is anywhere from $61,565 to $77,477.
