Math Lessons For Life

An award-winning Chatham teacher has taught her students a lesson she hopes they soon won't forget.

Anneke Gretton is a math teacher at Chatham Christian High School and took home an award this week for teaching excellence.

Gretton says her Grade 11 students researched poverty and developed financial plans to be able to live on their own.

"The students instead of researching the biggest house they could get, they researched the history of a neighbourhood where they really wanted to live.  They looked at how they could be part of renewing that neighbourhood and making that neighbourhood better," says Gretton.

Gretton is moving to Kings Christian Collegiate in the fall.

Gretton hopes students have a better idea of how much to save for university and buying a home.

"The idea of this project really wasn't to figure out a housing plan for a house you'll never actually buy.  It was really to figure out a plan for a career they'll actually do and a house that they will eventually buy," Gretton says.

Gretton hopes her students are more involved in real life math.

"My dream for the way this goes is that students actually live out those plans that they described in those neighbourhoods or maybe something even better but hopefully it gets them thinking down that path," says Gretton.
