CK Citizens Voice Concerns About Richmond St. Construction

Chatham-Kent citizens voiced their questions and concerns about the Richmond St. construction at a public information session.

During the meeting, which was held Tuesday night at the John D. Bradley Centre, the municipality welcomed the public to learn more about the changes that will be happening to Richmond St. this month.

Owner of Chatham Towing Services John Verkaik attended the meeting and discussed his concerns about the road's current condition.

"We have a lot of problems. People are parking tractor trailers in front to go to Arby's across the street or to Tim Horton's. Then when we come out of our driveway we can't see either way when there's traffic coming, so I'm sort of looking forward to the curbs going in [because] then we'll have clearer sight of either side," explains Verkaik.

Before coming to the meeting, Verkaik's main reservation about the upcoming construction was whether or not his trucks would have enough room on the road.

"When our units hook onto a tractor trailer that makes them like a 130 ft long and we have a heck of a time trying to get into the driveway as it is. Now all of a sudden they're going to rip it up... are we going to have enough access?" asks Verkaik.

Verkaik says Chris Thibert, the engineering and transportation manager for the municipality, reassured him that there will be a gravel shoulder included in the construction plans to accommodate his tow trucks.

Construction to widen Richmond St. between Bloomfield Rd. and Keil Dr. and add a continuous left-hand turn lane is set to begin early July.
