CK Mayor Frustrated With Trump's Environmental Policy

Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope isn't happy with US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Mayor Hope says the municipality is a member of the Great Lakes Initiative, a coalition representing 130 United States and Canadian mayors, as well as their communities of over 17-million people.

According to the mayor, Chatham-Kent is in full support of the agreement and refers to it constantly when making decisions.

"We're very proactive in dealing with our renewable energy side of things. I mean, we have a bio-gas initiative in our methane plants, we're working with our companies to be more efficient, [and] we're working with our LDCs [local distribution company] to make sure that we're using less energy and more conservation programs," explains Hope.

For Hope, Trump's decision to pull out of the agreement is illogical.

"When you really boil down to it, it's basically common sense. People want to breathe cleaner air, people want to make sure that they live in a community without smog, and they want to make sure that the water they drink is adequate for human consumption," says Hope.
