CK Habitat for Humanity Not Resting With National Award

Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent has received a national award.

The national Sustainable Funding Award recognizes the collaboration between the group's computer recycling program and the municipality's Employment and Social Services department.

Director Nancy McDowell says it's the first award for the group and it's a great feeling.

"It was first of all shock because there's only a handful of awards that are handed out to affiliates across Canada.  So, five years of working here to achieve this is remarkable," says McDowell.

Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent was founded in 2009 and helps families with affordable home ownership.

McDowell hopes the local habitat is paving the way for others.

"Hopefully other Habitat for Humanities can forge this kind of partnership with their local municipalities, gain some extra funding but it's helping the families, breaking the barriers, opening opportunities to those individuals who are hampered because they don't have access to a computer," McDowell says.

McDowell wants to do another year with the municipality and expand the computer program.

"This year we're expecting anywhere from 500 to 700 computers, life cycled out and we're going to refine that and maybe find out does Union Gas or St. Clair College maybe have computers that we can help with as well," says McDowell.
