CK Responsible Animal Ownership Bylaw Still Being Worked Out

Chatham-Kent is changing its Responsible Animal Ownership bylaw, but it's not clear how long that will take.

The bylaw passed Monday night at council prohibits the sale of non-rescue cats and dogs at retail stores within Chatham-Kent.

Some of the questions municipal staff still need to answer include how enforcement officers will distinguish between rescue and non-rescue pets and what the definition of a "rescue pet" is.

Nancy Havens, manager of licensing services, says the municipality will be communicating the bylaw amendment with local pet stores once it's completed.

She says the Responsible Animal Ownership bylaw will be amended to include a set fine for the offence.
