Police Officers And Firefighters Lead $100K List

Chatham-Kent has released its annual "Sunshine List."

The number of municipal employees earning more than $100,000 grew from 165 in 2015 to 184 in 2016.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Colby tops the list, earning a little over $270,000 last year including taxable benefits.

Emergency services personnel make up a strong majority of the list with 97 police officers and 40 members of the Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services cracking the $100,000 mark.

The highest paid fire and EMS employee was Chief Ken Stuebing at $155,736.

As for police officers, Police Chief Gary Conn earned $216,208 and Deputy Chief Jeff Littlewood was close behind at $201,666.

Of note, suspended officer Sergeant Robert Mugridge made the list again, he took home $111,367 in 2016, which is up from the $108,835 he earned in 2015. He has been suspended with pay since May 2014.

Other than Colby, Conn, and Littlewood, two other municipal employees also earned more than $200,000.

Director of Housing Services Shelley Wilkins earned $228,097 and Chatham-Kent CAO Don Shropshire's pay totaled $223,090.

In a release, Chatham-Kent's Chief Human Resources Officer Cathy Hoffman said ten of the individuals who made the list this year topped $100,000 in 2016 because of backpay.

She also points out that while the number of municipal employees on the Sunshine List continues to grow, the threshold for who's included on it hasn't been adjusted according to the rising cost of goods and services.

"It should be noted that the Consumer Price Index has not been applied to the reporting process since its inception in 1996," says Hoffman, adding that "would otherwise have put the reporting level at $145,125 in 2016."

At that level, Chatham-Kent would only have 17 names on the list.
