Merger Prompts Layoffs At Union Gas

Pink slips are being handed out this week at Union Gas' head office in Chatham.

An email from Union Gas spokesperson Andrea Stass says they include "employees and contractors at Union Gas in areas where there is duplication and overlap in roles that support corporate-wide functions."

About 15 positions at Union Gas are expected to be eliminated.

The move appears to be a direct result of the merger between Enbridge and Spectra Energy, which previously owned Union Gas.

Approximately 1,000 positions at Enbridge are being cut -- that works out to about 6% of the company's total workforce.

Stass says Enbridge is "committed to treating people fairly and with respect," adding the company is "providing support to those leaving... as well as those who remain."

The layoffs are not expected to impact "safety or operational reliability."

Stass also confirms that Union Gas' head office will continue to be located in Chatham and that "no offices will be closed as a result of this workforce alignment."

She says even with the layoffs taking place, customers can expect to experience the same level of service that the company has always provided.
