No More Big Deals For Canadian Country Music

Merlin native and singer Michelle Wright says country music in Canada is still vibrant -- but it isn't what it once was.

She says the days of the big country record deals appear to be gone.

"There's no big deals happening anymore to allow artists to have an international career that seemed to be there for myself and Prairie Oyster and the Wilkinsons and Carolyn Dawn Johnson and Terry Clark and Paul Brandt," she says.

Wright says she's working on a new album and will be home for the next three months working on it.

She says there are still a lot of successful Canadian country artists out there, but wishes they could be on the world stage a little more because they deserve to be.

"Back in the 90s and the early 2000s there was probably ten of us that had record deals that were international and we're not seeing that as much anymore," Wright says.
