It's Time To Check Your Smoke And CO Alarms

Check your smoke alarms this weekend!

That's the message from Chatham-Kent Fire.

Public Educator Whitney Burk is urging people to test and change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when they change the clocks this weekend.

Burk says people should check the alarm's shelf life as well, adding "it's important to check the date of their alarms because those need to be replaced as per manufacturer's instructions which is usually about ten years".

Chatham-Kent Fire also offers free home safety checks by calling 519-360-1998 or visiting ckfes.ca to sign up.

Burk says people need an early warning to escape safely from a fire and carbon monoxide.

"People tend to have a it won't happen to me attitude about fire and carbon monoxide but unfortunately we know that it does happen...and the best way to be protected is to have working smoke alarms in your home," says Burk.

Burk says it’s the law to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas.
