United Way Helping Local Women

The United Way of Chatham-Kent is looking to fill a void for women in need.

The organization is collecting feminine hygiene products for Tampon Tuesday. All of the items will be donated to area food banks and the Chatham-Kent Women's Centre.

"When you talk to a lot of food banks, this is a main item that's really needed for women out there," says Director Brian Armitage. "It's just not available most of the time at a food bank."

"Through the labour movement we started workplace drives," says Armitage. "It started last week where they're actually collecting, they we pink boxes out in the workplaces, and people are bringing in hygiene products."

Monday night, the United Way and the Women's Leadership Council are holding a Tampon Tuesday event at their office at 425 McNaughton Ave. in Chatham.

"We're going to be there, and basically admission is a box of hygiene products," says Armitage. "All these different groups are going to come out throughout Chatham-Kent. I've already seen some of [the donations], and it's growing."

The event runs from 7pm-9pm, and will feature guest speakers, appetizers and entertainment.
