Moving Forward With Chatham Condo Project

The Boardwalk Condominium project in downtown Chatham is expected to be open for business by December 2017.

Site supervisor Brian Chute says the project is really starting to take off.

"We think our timing is right on at the moment," says Chute. "Earlier in the year we had hoped to start up and hopefully have it done by the summer but we had a few setbacks."

He says those setbacks involved concrete and balcony related issues, but adds those problems have since been dealt with.

"We've overcome a good portion of those problems now and we're moving forward into the actual apartments," he says.

"Before we can [start doing the] drywall we have to do duct work, electrical, and plumbing," he says. "All those contractors are coming on board and we're getting ready to start moving forward."

A pair of city councillors also recently took a tour of the area, in order to get an idea of where the project stands and what needs to be done.

"The purpose of their visit was to have something positive to say and something to bring back to the municipality," says Chute.

The tour also acted as an opportunity for those involved in the condo project to voice their opinion on how to generate more traffic to the downtown area.

"If the Queen St. overpass opened up at the 401, we'd be investing a lot deeper into the municipality of Chatham-Kent," says Chute. "If we can get that road opened we would do a great deal more investment in this community."

He adds there are certain projects being looked at in the downtown core that would be "spectacular," but have been put on hold. He says if there was more traffic coming in from Hwy. 401, then they would "step it up."
