Activity Key For Seniors

The importance of exercise is being touted by health officials for seniors to keep mobile and manage chronic disease.

Fran Betts is an instructor with the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging at Western University and she was a guest speaker at the Seniors Fair in Chatham on Friday.

She says mobility, fall prevention and managing chronic conditions like arthritis, osteoperosis, diabetes and heart disease are things that can "cramp your style" as a person ages.

Betts says it's never too late to start but it's better if you plan ahead, adding, "you're your own best advocate and if you can convince yourself to do something everyday but I think the trick is to start before you get to 65."

She says the Active Lifestyle Centre in Chatham is a great place to start because it has something for everyone at various levels.

"One of the newest issues that a lot of people have is sitting disease and the new 'fitbits' will remind you every hour to get up and walk around a little bit," Betts says and adds even a quick walk around the kitchen or the yard will do you good.

She also reminds people to get up during T-V commercials after dinner.
