Large Medical Marijuana Production Facility Looming

If it's approved, a proposed medical marijuana production facility in Chatham would be one of Canada's largest.

The issue is being brought before Chatham-Kent Council Monday night.

Planner Ryan Jacques tells BlackburnNews.com that it would occupy 12 acres at 715 Richmond St.

Jacques says he's confident the facility will be very secure and well regulated by the federal government.

"They have very rigorous screening processes including in-depth security checks by the RCMP and site inspections," he says.

Jacques says this would be the seventh site in Chatham-Kent allowed to produce medical marijuana.

Chatham-Kent police and fire officials have no objections to the facility.

The nearest home is 1,300 ft away, which is well within the required setback of 300 ft.

The operator already has another similar facility in Chatham-Kent, says Jacques.

Jacques says he isn't sure when construction will begin but says "should [the applicants] be successful, construction of these facilities takes up to one year," once approval is given by Health Canada.
