Maroons Hammer Stars 6-2

The Chatham Maroons crushed the St. Thomas Stars 6-2 in Junior B hockey action on Friday.

Bobby Harrison and Kevin Gursoy scored in the first period to give Chatham a 2-0 lead. The Maroons repeated the performance in the second, with Steven Beenackers and Teddy McGeen each scoring once to make it 4-0.

Bryce Yetman scored early in the third frame for Chatham, but St. Thomas made it on the board with a goal after 13 minutes. Nolan VandenBoorn scored to add another for the Maroons with six minutes left in the game.  St. Thomas scored a goal less than a minute later, but it would be their last of the game.

Chatham also narrowly outshot the Stars 34-32.

Maroons head coach Ron Horvat, who coached the Stars for eight seasons before making the move to Chatham recently, says there was an adjustment, but things are starting to slide into place.

"If you can get to know your kids, it really helps a coach put them in good situations that maybe they're not comfortable with," he says. "But, just having been with them now four times, I feel much more comfortable than I did walking in here just a week ago."

The Maroons will be at home on Sunday to play the Lambton Shores Predators at 7pm.
