Chatham's Burger 33 Shuts Down

First Coffee Culture shut down, and now Burger 33 in Chatham is also closing its doors for good.

Obsidian Group Inc. Vice President George Karamountzos says the timing is unfortunate, but the burger joint just wasn't seeing the traction he was hoping it would.

"The brand is not one of our franchise concepts -- it was the only location in existence at the time," says Karamountzos. "It was created as a filler concept for the Union Burger and it didn't work very well in Chatham, so we decided against moving forward with it."

The Burger 33 location in Chatham first opened its doors in June, and just closed last week.

Karamountzos says he's grateful for the support that they received from local residents, but the business just wasn't sustainable.

"We tried many promotions and things to keep the business going, but it just never thrived over there," says Karamountzos. "It's sad to have to leave the Chatham market and hopefully maybe one day we can go back, but going into what should be a very slow season, the decision had to be made to close the doors at this point as opposed to waiting a little bit longer."

Karamountzos says between eight to ten staff members were working at the Burger 33 location on Grand Ave. W when it closed.

Management company Obsidian Group Inc. also closed the Coffee Culture location on King St. on December 15.  Karamountzos gave similar reasons for the closure of the local business.
