Final Stretch For Red Kettle Campaign

The Salvation Army of Chatham-Kent is at 45% of their fundraising goal for the red kettle campaign.

With two weeks to go, officials say that's on par with years past.

"Even though we start our campaign quietly in the beginning of October, when we mail out our letter, it's really the last two weeks that the big donations come in," says Captain Stephanie Watkinson. "So we're really urging people to dig deep, because those fund are really needed."

They've raised over $200,000 so far, but their goal is $450,000.

"The Canada Food Price Index report came out and prices of food are suppose to go up 3% to 5% next year," says Watkinson. "So families are struggling now between paying rent, and hydro, and food, and now food prices are going up. So there's going to be more of a struggle on what to pay next year, so we really need the funds to help support people."

The Salvation Army is always looking for volunteers to stand by kettles.

"If volunteers step forward then we have people manning the kettles and then people can donate to the kettles," says Watkinson. "But if we don't have volunteers, then we have to pull the kettles."
