Woodbridge Foam Workers Close To Strike

Nearly 240 Blenheim workers could be on strike as early as Thursday.

Unifor Local 127 represents the employees at Woodbridge Foam in Blenheim. With their contract ending on December 1, company and union officials have been working to reach a new collective agreement.

On Sunday, workers held a ratification meeting on the latest contract, but voted 64% against the new deal.

"[The company] has customers they supply, but we don't want to put our business and the future employment of our members in jeopardy. So we're trying our hardest to find a deal that's satisfactory for our membership," says Local 127 President Rick MacLean.

Back on November 6, participating employees unanimously supported taking strike action. MacLean says the two sides began meeting again Monday, and Woodbridge has apparently introduced a new proposal that Unifor officials are now looking over.

"As soon as we get a tentative [deal] with the company we will tell the membership, and pick a date and time for the ratification," adds MacLean.

If a new deal isn't reached, Woodbridge Foam workers will be in a strike position at midnight Wednesday.
