Ensuring Student's Well-Being

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board is mapping out their approach to the Well-Being Strategy - something practiced in all school boards across the province.

Although the SCCDSB has made some achievements with the three-year strategy, there is still much to be done.

Superintendent of Education Deb Crawford says there are certain steps they plan on taking, one of which is the implementation of Brief Intervention for School Clinicians.

"It's an assessment that would be done by one of our CYW's - our Social Workers - to help identify students who are in greater need of some support," says Crawford. "[They'd] help them (students) on a pathway to care within either the system our within the community."

The goal behind the strategy is to have youth be taken care of in all aspects, including their physical, emotional, social and cognitive states.

Another tier of their Well-Being Strategy is to train certain members in schools on a suicide prevention protocol.

Crawford says it's not that they're seeing an increase in need for these types of services but it's a way to help kids should they need it.

"We're seeing an increase in understanding and perhaps response to students who are needing help," says Crawford.
