Van Damme: Stop Signs Are Not Enough

Chatham-Kent councillor David Van Damme is calling for action as collisions continue to pile up between Blenheim and Ridgetown.

He says more than 50 crashes have taken place at the intersection of Ridge Line and Kent Bridge Rd. over the past 14 years with seven of those taking place over the past nine months alone.

"I certainly think it's possible to put up LED beacons on the existing stop lines," says Van Damme. "That will give people more advanced warning that they're approaching a busy intersection."

While Van Damme is confident on the number of collisions that have taken place at that intersection, he's not sure how many of them involved injuries or fatalities.

"That's where I'm hoping administration can put forward a report, which will shed a little more light on the severity of them," says Van Damme. " There have been far too many collisions and we can't let that go unnoticed."

Van Damme will be bringing the issue up at municipal council Monday night, where he'll also be asking municipal staff to come up with an estimate for how much it would cost to install new warning lights.

"It's a busy road, so obviously I'm looking for a quick solution on it," says Van Damme. "I'd be content to see something done at that intersection before the new year.
