Dog-Fighting Pretrials Still On Hold

A defence lawyer in the Tilbury dog-fighting ring case has the disclosure he asked for, but needs more time to review it.

Earlier this month, defence lawyer Frank Retar was looking to secure further evidence in the animal cruelty case. His request came after his client Robert Tomlin's matters were joined with the other suspects accused in the alleged dog-fighting ring.

The pretrial for the other suspects, John and Kim Robert, as well as Michel Gagnon, started in September. Their lawyer, Ken Marley, is ready to continue that pretrial. The problem is Retar only received further disclosure on the case earlier this month.

To make matters more complicated, that disclosure has come in the form of an external hard drive, containing 17,000 pages of evidence.

On Thursday, Retar told a Chatham court he needs more time and resources to review the evidence. He`s working on a letter to Legal Aid Ontario, to see if it will cover his fees for that review.

The Tilbury dog-fighting case will be back in court October 31. During that time Retar hopes to hear back from Legal Aid, as well as look over the information contained in the hard drive.
