LHIN Closely Monitoring Hospital Finances

Hotel Dieu-Grace Healthcare is staying in the green, while the CKHA and Leamington Memorial Hospitals are on track for deficits this fiscal year.

The Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network has been keeping tabs on each of their hospitals' financial reports more frequently. This in an effort to better monitor and address any fiscal surprises.

Hotel Dieu-Grace has been a surprise as the LHIN nears the halfway point of the fiscal year. While the hospital projected a $1,489,000 deficit, so far it sits with a $627,117 surplus.

Both the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) and Windsor Regional Hospital are still on track to hit their expected $1.5-million and $6.6-million deficits respectively. But as LHIN Acting-CEO Ralph Ganter explains, they might have to re-evaluate the CKHA's status soon.

"The CKHA is probably in a bit of a different spot right now. Although those numbers show July 31 year-to-date, there's since been a new supervisor and CEO. So they'll probably have to look at their financials again," says Ganter.

The Leamington District Memorial Hospital (LDMH), however, is in a different situation.

While they originally projected a $1,796,344 deficit to start the year, they're on pace for a $1,962,000 deficit.

Ganter adds the revitalization of the OB unit, as well as the temporary renting-out of a portable CT scanner are the cause of the deficit. They're in conversations with the province to address the situation.

"We'll [eventually] get more obstetrics cases, and more rehab cases. But we have to deal with the Leamington deficit this year on a one-time basis, because we knew it was going to take that much time to get those waits in. This gives them more dollars through the [provincial] funding formula," says Ganter.

He adds the current projections are still early, and officials will review hospital finances at every LHIN board meeting to address concerns.
