Would You Be Prepared In An Emergency?

A community forum will be testing locals on how prepared they are for any type of emergency - like a zombie apocalypse for example.

The question, "would you survive a zombie apocalypse?" has been circulating over social media for the past couple of weeks.

Obviously the idea of zombies is far-fetched, but Public Educator for CK Fire Whitney Burk says if you can survive a zombie apocalypse, you can survive anything. It's also the theme behind the upcoming forum "Are You Prepared For Anything?"

"It's just kind of a fun, light-hearted way of thinking about the items that you would need if there was an actual disaster in Chatham-Kent," says Burk.

At 6pm on October 17, Burk will be joining Councillor Trevor Thompson and Goderich Fire Chief Steve Gardiner to host a forum on how to be prepared for the first 72 hours of an emergency.

Burk says there are two main reasons why people struggle during an emergency situation:

1. There wasn't enough of a warning

2. People were not prepared

"We can't control when those warnings come and how long we're going to have before the disaster happens," says Burk. "But we can control how prepared we are."

During the interactive discussion, there will also be a game.

Using game cards, participants will be tested on what supplies are actually needed in an emergency.

"You will have about 20 or 25 items and you'll have to choose about 12 or 15 of those items," says Burk.

Anyone who participates will also have a chance to win Tim Horton's gift cards.

The community forum will take place at the Civic Centre in Chatham before the regular council meeting commences. It will also be aired live on CogecoTV and Facebook.
