New Ownership For Union Gas

Union Gas could be operating under a Canadian-based energy delivery company soon.

Calgary-based Enbridge Inc. is planning to buy Houston-based Spectra Energy Corp. in a stock deal worth about $37-billion.

Union Gas, which has its head office in Chatham, is a Spectra Energy company with assets of $7.2 billion and approximately 2,300 employees.

Enbridge officials say the combination of the two companies would create North America's largest energy infrastructure company with an estimated combined value of $165-billion.

The headquarters of the combined company would be in Calgary, while gas distribution would continue to be based in Ontario.

According to Enbridge officials, the deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2017 as long as it receives all of the necessary approvals from shareholders, the federal government, and any other applicable regulatory boards.
