You might want to think twice about washing your car this weekend.
The Lower Thames Conservation Authority is calling for people to start conserving water due to the low water conditions at the Lower Thames River watershed.
Water resources and regulations technician, Jason Homewood says water levels are considered lower than usual for this time of year, putting it at a level one low water condition.
"Over the last three months the water precipitation values have been below 80% of the normal average," says Homewood. "Across the watershed it's hovering around the 65% mark."
He says the lack of rainfall the area has seen is the driving force to the low water levels in both the Upper and Lower Thames River.
If a lack of rainfall continues and drops below the 60% mark, the low water condition will then go to a Level 2.
Homewood says they will be monitoring the water conditions to see if the rainfall in July is enough to pull out of the level one condition.
He says being at a level one could mean there's a water supply problem.
"We don't want to move into a level two or level three situation where the demand for water outpaces the supply," says Homewood.
Homewood says residents should reduce the amount of water used by about 10%, which can be done by taking shorter showers or skipping the car wash.
