PUC Opening Doors To Elementary, College Students

Officials with Chatham-Kent's Public Utilities Commission say they've been working hard to make their operations more transparent to the public.

So far this year they've offered tours to Grade 7 and 8 students, and they hope to let elder students at Canterbury College see their facilities in the near future. General Manager Tim Sunderland says it's part of an effort to allow residents to see what happens to their water before it comes through the tap.

"We have 17 water and wastewater facilities in Chatham-Kent," says Sunderland. "We want to make sure the public knows where our water supply comes from, what our staff do, and how we provide safe drinking water."

The PUC also offers four scholarships to Environmental Management students at the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus. Sunderland says they have hired graduates of the program in the past.
