Firefighter Recruitment In Chatham-Kent

If you've always wanted to be a firefighter, Chatham-Kent wants to talk.

The fire service is recruiting volunteer firefighters for several of the rural fire halls, something Assistant Chief Bob Davidson says is necessary from time to time.

"Turnover would vary on a year-by-year basis, but what we have tried to do is standardize the recruitment process so that all the stations are recruiting in the same way. Testing is standardized across the municipality and the interview process is standardized," he says. "It allows for everyone to be treated the same way across the municipality."

Davidson says training and assessing applicants are also being standardized across the municipality.

He says there are about 340 volunteer positions and typically there are vacancies because of promotions and retirements.

Right now there are about 15 openings and anyone who is considering applying should check the municipal web site.

There is a training period that requires one weekend a month for a year to allow applications to meet certification requirements.
