French's Deal Could Triple Production

Highbury Canco in Leamington is in the final stages of reaching a deal with French's that could see its production of tomato paste triple.

President Sam Diab says he's very confident a deal will be reached within the next couple of weeks.

"Things are going well. We have a really good relationship with that group, as well as some other customers we're working with and our current customers," says Diab.

He says they are still unsure just how many more tomato growers they will need to fulfill the French's contract.

"We're still working through our strategy both internally and externally with our growers on who to source the tomatoes from and how many additional growers would come on board," says Diab.

When Diab spoke to BlackburnNews.com in January he estimated it could mean an additional 15-29 growers.

Reaching a deal could also mean more job security for the over 400 employees at the facility.

"The more we can build this tomato paste business the better," says Diab. "It's a business that's really built around volume and scale. We're competing with very large tomato paste producers in California so for us the larger we can make this business the better."
