A number of Chatham-Kent agricultural groups, including several individual farmers, have donated a pile of food to the Salvation Army and Outreach For Hunger food banks in recognition of Food Freedom Day.
By the second week of February, the average Canadian has earned enough to pay for their food supply for a full year.
The Kent Federation of Agricultures Mary Anne Udvari says the group wanted to mark the event by helping those who can't afford the food they need.
"Things such as carrots, and mushrooms and apples that people might not have opportunity to be able to buy during these winter months," she says.
Brenda LeClair of the Outreach for Hunger food bank says the donation is important for more than one reason.
"An event like this is extremely important to Outreach for Hunger for our clients and the people we serve," she says. "Not only is it the food that is coming in, but it raises that awareness that the need is on-going."
LeClair also says it is discouraging that food banks continue to have registrations of new clients they have not seen before.
