UPDATE: Charges In River Van

Chatham-Kent police have charged a suspected who is believed to have driven a stolen vehicle into the Sydenham River in Wallaceburg this morning.

Constable Renee Cowell says the stolen vehicle was pulled from the river after 9am.

The unidentified suspect faces charges of theft of a motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime.

"I can confirm the vehicle was stolen this morning from Riverview Drive in Chatham, we have since located a male party that was in the area he was transported to Sydenham hospital for medical treatment," she says. "Divers took to the water to ensure there was no one else and we have not located anyone and the search has been called off."

Cowell says while the man was released from medical care he is now in police custody and faces possible charges.

They say he is a 32-year-old resident of North Bay and was sitting on the back porch of one of the homes near the river when police arrived around 6:30 am.
