Turning Winter's Corner

It's time for those who are not fans of winter to celebrate, according to Environment Canada.

Senior Climatologist David Phillips says this week marks the "dead of winter," which means temperatures are expected to slowly rise each day from here until the summer.

"There will be moments where you maybe wish you were somewhere else, when the snow flies or it's cold temperatures, but we haven't had many of those and we don't see that there will be many of those ahead of us either."

Phillips says the end of January is typically the coldest time of the year, on average. In southwestern Ontario, highs usually sit around -1 C (30 F), with lows of -9 C (16 F), but this week Environment Canada predicts highs up to 4 C (39 F) and 5 C (41 F).

Phillips says this region has enjoyed average temperatures about a degree higher than normal this January, and he anticipates a warmer-than-usual February and March, with an early spring.
