Travis Konecny Traded To Sarnia Sting (Audio)

The Ottawa 67's have traded Chatham-Kent native Travis Konecny to the Sarnia Sting.

The trade was officially announced Wednesday night, with the Sting also acquiring overage centre Sam Studnicka and Ottawa’s third round pick in 2016.

In exchange, the 67’s will receive Sasha Chmelevski, Chase Campbell, a second round pick in 2016 (Owen Sound), a second round pick in 2017 (Sault Ste. Marie), a third round pick in 2017 (Windsor), a fifth round pick in 2017 (Saginaw), a second round pick in 2019 (Sarnia), a third round pick in 2019 (Sarnia), a fifth round pick in 2019 (Oshawa), a third round pick in 2020 (Sarnia), a conditional second round pick in 2021 (Sarnia), and a conditional second round pick in 2022 (Sarnia).

Konecny, who was drafted first overall in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection, has 45 points in 29 games played this season.

The Clachan native recently returned from representing Canada at the World Junior Championships in Finland.

“This is a defining moment for us as an organization," says Sting General Manager Nick Sinclair in a media release. "We couldn’t be happier to welcome Travis Konecny and Sam Studnicka to the Sarnia Sting Hockey Club. Travis’ combination of leadership, skill and character make him a player that every coach wants in his lineup, and every fan wants on their team. He’s a guy who plays with high intensity and has the ability to be a game-changer every night. Sam plays with a similar type of tenacity and plays with a physical presence. We expect Sam to come in and contribute offensively but also be a big part of our leadership group down the stretch. The addition of both Travis and Sam will provide a big shot in the arm for our hockey club, and make us that more dangerous as we push to finish atop the West Division Standings.”

Studnicka, a former Sun County Panther and Chatham Maroon, has 16 goals and 26 points this season. He was originally selected in the fifth round of the 2011 OHL Priority Selection and has played a total of 228 career OHL games.
