The province is topping up funding for organizations that are helping resettle Syrian refugees, and the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County is on the list.
A small number of refugees have already started arriving in Windsor, including four who arrived on the federal government's first military flight to Toronto Thursday night. City officials can't say with any certainty how many will eventually settle in Windsor.
Organizations in six Ontario cities will share another $3.7-million to support first-language settlement services, trauma counselling and mental health services, housing assistance and employment supports.
The money is on top of $8.5-million committed over two-and-a-half years to integrate refugees and support private sponsors.
"The outpour of support from Ontarians from all walks of life has been truly inspiring," says Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Dr. Eric Hoskins. "Our government is committed to working together with Ontario's health care providers, settlement agencies and other sectors to provide the support they need to ensure that we will look back on this important moment in history with pride."
A release from the Ontario government says more organizations will receive funding in the coming months to address service caps in the communities where refugees settle.
