UofW Students Vote On New Sports Complex

Students at the University of Windsor will decide if a new $73-million sports complex should be funded by raising fees.

A two-day referendum vote ends tonight at midnight. It calls for a new capital fee of $125 be paid by all students once the building becomes operational. The fee will remain in place for 30 years.

The proposed athletic facility would see a larger fitness centre, indoor and outdoor sports courts, running trail and a new accessible pool.

In order for the referendum to pass the vote needs to exceed 50%. Students hold all the cards because the government funds academic buildings, not recreation facolities.

Two Facebook pages have popped up trying to gain support on both sides.

The 'Vote Yes' page estimates nearly half of all university students use the current St. Denis Centre, not just athletes. It also says the current athletic facility will remain open during construction and most programs will be unaffected.

On the other side of the debate students show concern over not being allowed to opt out. They also question why current students are voting on something that will affect future ones.

Results are expected Wednesday at 6pm.
