Multiple Stores Likely To Fill Old Target

The old Target location at Devonshire Mall will likely be chopped up into several smaller stores instead of the space being filled with a large retailer.

Windsor's Target closed in April and the mall says it's a tall order to find one tenant to fill the space.

Devonshire Mall general manager Chris Savard says the area will be completely transformed.

"We're currently working through a number of designs and chatting with a number of retailers," Savard says. "We're pretty excited about what we've come up with, we're just certainly not at a point where we can disclose the details."

He says it has been a challenging process since Target left a large hole.

"It's obviously easier if you could have found one tenant just to take the entire space," he says. "As we know in the Canadian landscape, there's not a (lot) of people (who) will sign up for that size of space and those that will are probably already well-positioned here in Windsor."

Canadian Tire took over some Target locations in Canada, while there was talk of interest from Goodlife Fitness, Giant Tiger, Walmart, Lowe's and TJX Companies, which owns Homesense, TJ Maxx and Marshall's.

Recently Devonshire Mall has been able to attract U.S. retailers like Forever 21 Red, Pandora, Michael Hill and Sephora. Savard says shoppers may see more of that in the old Target store.

"We're certainly looking and having a number of discussions with first-to-market retailers," he says. "We hear from our customers and they're very clear on telling us the sorts of new tenancies that they're looking for."

It's unclear when an official announcement will be made, but Savard says we'll know more in the coming months.
