Black Friday In A Border City (Poll)

With a low Canadian dollar, some Windsor retailers say they expect to retain more local shoppers for Black Friday as opposed to seeing a spike in U.S. visitors.

Devonshire Mall General Manager Chris Savard says it's hard to compare the popular shopping day between two countries.

"We're working under a very different retail environment," he says. "What we're seeing is a greater participation level, greater amount of discounts from all of our retailers as the Canadian retailer starts to understand the importance of the Canadian Black Friday."

By adding U.S. retailers Sephora, Forever 21 Red, Michael Hill and Pandora to the mall he says it gives people more of a reason to shop locally.

Experts also predict Canada retailers to greatly benefit during this year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.

Meanwhile at the Downtown Chatham Centre, Marketing Director Jaclyn Gillier says there's a big difference between Black Friday and Boxing Day.

"Black Friday is the beginning of the season, so you know your sizes are going to be there, your styles are going to be there," she says. "Where (on) a Boxing Day you're getting the sales -- usually the same sales, if not better -- but everything has been picked over."

Most of the 37 retailers at the Chatham mall will open at 10am Friday, some a little earlier.

Devonshire Mall is open from 7am-10pm on Black Friday. Last year just under 50,000 people came through the mall and they expect to exceed that this week.

The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society is also running a promotion Friday only -- 50% off cats, kittens and small animals from 11am-8pm.
