Rondeau Heritage Designation Finalized

Rondeau Cottagers came in droves to Chatham-Kent Council Monday, and were pleased with what they heard.

The decision by council to officially pass a by-law designating Rondeau Provincial Park a heritage site was greeeted with a round of applause by the gallery. Rondeau Cottagers' Association President Dr. David Colby says they're all elated.

"I just couldn't be prouder. I was born and raised here, a Chatham boy from a long way back. Rondeau is where my heart is, and this is where it all comes together."

A couple presentations claimed council didn't know enough about the park to make his kind of decision. They fear more human traffic at the park could compromise endangered or at-risk species. But Colby says the waterfront is durable, and the cottagers consider themselves "stewards" of the park.

"Many species at risk use the shelter of man-made structures to persist and survive. We're part of the environment and should always treat it with respect."

Councillors say the designation could be an economic driver for CK, with the municipality receiving spinoff of regular visitors.
