How A UAW Strike Will Affect Windsor

If there is a strike at Fiat Chrysler's plants in the U.S., the impact will be felt at the Windsor Assembly Plant in very short order.

Unifor Local 444 president Dino Chiodo says a walk out in Kokomo or Trenton, Michigan will affect production in Canada.

"That could shut operations down -- probably within three or four shifts," he says. "But, you also have stamping, and that could negatively impact Canada, could be as early as four to six hours."

The United Auto Workers served Fiat Chrysler Automobiles notice yesterday that unless a new contract is reached by 11:59pm Wednesday, it's members will walk off the job. Members at those plants recently rejected a tentative contract.

Chiodo continues to hope the two sides reach a deal but understands why it's been difficult getting members to support ratification.

"It's been a long time since they've seen any increases. They've got a two-tier structure that they're challenged with. They're ratification votes have been generally low, so people have been in dismay for a long period of time."
