Fire Prevention Week Underway

The Chatham-Kent fire department is recommending smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom.

The message is even more important following two house fires in Chatham-Kent on Tuesday.

"Most deaths that happen in fires, happen between the hours of 11pm and 7am when most people are asleep," says Public Educator Whitney Burk.

Local firefighters are going to schools this week to run fire drills and to teach fire safety as a part of Fire Prevention Week. They're also going to homes to check more working smoke alarms.

"I'm proud to say that CK residents have done very, very well," says Burk. "We've gotten really good feedback in terms of people welcoming us into the homes to check everything, and also most people who we have communicated with, they do, they have working smoke alarms."
