SECC Shuttling Voters

The South Essex Community Council is setting up an election day shuttle targeted at senior and disabled voters.

Mark Wybenga, department coordinator of community services with the SECC, says the shuttle is meant to help remove barriers to voting some face.

"We are about helping people to connect in the community to remain active and we want to help give a voice to those people who may be marginalized," says Wybenga. "There are some specific criteria. We are targeting the senior population and those with a disability so they will be given priority."

Wybenga says the bill for the program hasn't been completely nailed down.

"Our vehicles are running throughout the day, so we do have drivers who are on standby," says Wybenga. "If we happen to have availability on the shuttle we're going to squeeze folks in, but this is something we felt was very important to do for the community so we're not really looking at it from a cost perspective."

The shuttle is for those in the Leamington, Kingsville and Wheatley area. The deadline for reservations is 4pm on October 15. Riders will need to show their voter information card to their driver when boarding the shuttle. Call 519-326-8692 x342 to book reservations.
