Drivers checking their phones on the road should probably starting putting their devices away now.
Starting Tuesday, offenders can be fined starting at $400, up from $225. They can also be issued up to three demerit points on their licence.
Chatham-Kent traffic Sergeant Ed Maclean says this is a substantial bump in penalties. "This is a significant increase in regards to fines. It's a big concern not just in Chatham-Kent, but throughout Ontario. Texting is fast becoming the number one reason for fatalities while driving."
Maclean adds that fine can be increased up to $1000 if the case goes to the courts.
