New Role For Doug Melvin

Chatham native Doug Melvin is moving into an advisory role with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Melvin tells BlackburnNews.com he wanted to get the word out early.

"This is the time of year where there is speculation on managers, GMs, on players, on a lot of people," says Melvin. "I wanted to be ahead of the game and presenting this as to what my feelings are and what my personal decision was."

The 63-year-old has been the Brewers GM since September 2002 and says feels it's time to give ownership the chance to look over the next generation of general managers.

"I was young at one time, I was 42 when I got my first GM's job," says Melvin. "I was prepared for it at that time -- I maybe thought about getting it earlier, but I was more prepared at 42."

Under Melvin's leadership, the Brewers had a run of winning seasons, culminating with the Brewers' best regular season in franchise history in 2011 during which the team won a franchise record 96 games and made an appearance in the NL Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
