Residents Remember Slavery Abolition

It is Emancipation Day, marking the date 181 years ago when slavery was banned in the British Empire.

Assistant program manager at Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site on the edge of Dresden Brenda Lambkin says people may forget there was slavery in this area before that. "We didn't have a lot but there was slavery. Then Lieutenant Governor John Gray Simcoe passed an act that no new slaves can come in."

She says that means it was being reduced when the British Parliament banned it.

There are music and spoken word presentations and other celebrations underway from 10am until 3pm at Uncle Tom's Cabin and in Windsor today and tomorrow. Here are the full event schedules for Windsor and Dresden.
