Construction has already impacted traffic on Hwy. 401 near Tilbury and it's only going to get worse.
The westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 between Merlin Rd. and County Rd. 42 is being completely resurfaced, with crews also adding an asphalt shoulder. Since work began on July 6, there have been three crashes at the site as a result of construction, including two within three hours of each other.
OPP Constable Janine Belanger says there were major delays after the accidents Friday and those delays will likely continue. "Exercise a lot of patience. Keep a lot of room and distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead of you and be ready to stop abruptly. There are times where traffic comes to a dead stop in the construction zone."
Starting July 30, Hwy. 401 will be reduced to one lane in each direction, with work wrapping up in November. With the speed limit reduced to 80, Belanger reminds motorists speeding fines are doubled when construction workers are on site.
