Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope wants community partners will help educate the public on the proper use of e-bikes.
Chatham-Kent Police have information about e-bike safety on their website, but Hope says he'd like to see more hands-on training activities for users.
Hope acknowledges e-bikes as a practical and cheap form of transportation. But he adds he regularly hears from motorists, worried about accidents. "They are concerned about following e-bikes, and some have to deal with the incompentencies of those driving. That's no different from a car or a motorcycle."
Hope adds he has nothing against e-bikes, but if people are using area roadways they need to be safe. "A lot of us think we know a lot already, but I think education can go a long way. How do we inform people about rules of the road?"
Police Chief Gary Conn says he'll look into additional educational opportunities for e-bike riders, as well as other small motorized vehicles.
