Education Lacking In Migrant Worker Integration

Authorities aren't doing enough to ensure migrant workers integrate with their Canadian communities.

That's according to lawyer Margarita Caropresi while speaking in Kingsville at the recent Migrant Worker Community Program's AGM. She points to education as a key gap needing to be filled and thinks Leamington could lead the charge in better educational programming.

"Leamington is a very unique place," says Caropresi. "Anything that could be done here could have a big, big impact in the rest of the province and even the country as an example of a best practice."

Caropresi feels better education will benefit everyone.

"[Employers] can see [migrant workers] more as a person right? Your perspective will change," says Caropresi. "Workers, we need them to learn about Canada, Canadians and also people in general. We need them to commit, we need them to cooperate."

While Caropresi doesn't offer a plan to implement the needed changes, she hopes to continue the conversation with different groups and agencies to provide improved programming to better integrate migrant workers into Canadian communities.
