Preventing People From Becoming Homeless

Chatham-Kent's social services department wants to be more proactive in dealing with people at risk of becoming homeless.

Director of Employment and Social Services Valerie Colasanti says she wants to hire a community housing relations position.

"Those at risk of becoming homeless, people who are struggling to pay the rent every single month, do they need assistance with financial literacy? People who are struggling with other issues and they just might need someone to be an advocate for them," she says. "Right now, we are doing a pilot (project) in Wallaceburg at some of our public housing so we are able to find those folks, the community relations worker has an office in the buildings and has been going door-to-door."

The department has to get Chatham-Kent Council's approval to expand the program to Chatham. The position would be funded by the province.
