Caution Urged After Deer Leaps Through Window

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is advising residents to be wary of wildlife after an agitated deer crashed through the window of a coffee shop in downtown Chatham.

On Thursday around 8am, witnesses say a deer leapt through a window at the Tim Hortons located on Third St.

Jolanta Kowalski, a media relations officer with the ministry, says it is believed that the deer has left the city and has reentered a "green space."

"We did follow up with the local police and established that the deer had left the scene and didn't appear to be injured," she says. "We did pass along our contact information to the police in case a situation arises with the deer somewhere else."

Kowalski says residents should avoid giving food or water to wildlife, and should not attempt direct interaction. She says contact with wildlife can unintentionally cause the animals to stay in a populated area.
