Caesars Discusses Severance Packages

Following yesterday's round of layoffs, the union representing many of the unionized workers at Caesars Windsor says it's in talks with the casino about severance packages.

It's not clear yet if the packages will be offered to the 47 full-time and 15 part-time workers in finance, transportation, and food and beverage who received pink slips. Unifor Local 444 President Dino Chiodo says nothing is final yet. "They're packages for individuals if they decide they've got something else they can apply themselves to, another job opportunity, or are close to 65 and want to retire."

The latest round of layoffs at Caesars Windsor comes after the employer conducted studies to improve efficiencies and productivity. Chiodo says the studies looked at amalgamating some departments, eliminating others and creating new ones.

The casino also has 47 new job postings that Chiodo says offer similar pay.

As for future layoffs, Chiodo says it's hard to say if the studies will result in more job cuts. "We haven't been informed that anything is coming up after this."
