Parents Pull Students From School

Nearly 200 students have been pulled out of schools in the Lambton Kent Public School Board in protest over the province's new sex ed curriculum.

Director of Education Jim Costello says some parents have indicated their children won't attend today, others for three days, and some for the entire week.

"A small number of parents have emailed me and I've directed them to the Ministry of Education website," says Costello. "There are some good documents and resource documents around key messages around the curriculum and also a myth vs. fact sheet that we would encourage them to go take a look at which will provide them some good insight into the curriculum and the rationale behind it."

Costello says it's the parents' right to do what they feel is best for their children, but worries it may send the wrong message while putting the students behind. He adds that students won't be punished for being absent but will be responsible for catching up on missed assignments and homework.
